The information contained in the EuroScan database can be searched by using additional meta information.

Specific meta information are e.g. categories. These categories are very high level and can be used with other additional information (author/date/etc.)

The categories are added during the upload process by the publishing people and follow the principles described here:

Pharmaceuticals (drugs / medicines) are all biological and/or chemical substances or a combination of substances that are intended to treat, prevent or diagnose a disease, or to restore, correct or modify physiological functions by exerting a pharmacological, immunological or metabolic action. This category includes also Advanced therapy medicinal products (ATMP) (based on EMA definition)

Medical Devices

(according to WHO definition)

‘Medical device’ means any instrument, apparatus, implement, machine, appliance, implant, reagent for in vitro use, software, material or other similar or related article, intended by the manufacturer to be used, alone or in combination, for human beings, for one or more of the specific medical purpose(s) of:

  • diagnosis, prevention, monitoring, treatment or alleviation of disease,
  • diagnosis, monitoring, treatment, alleviation of or compensation for an injury,
  • investigation, replacement, modification, or support of the anatomy or of a physiological process,
  • supporting or sustaining life,
  • control of conception,
  • disinfection of medical devices
  • providing information by means of in vitro examination of specimens derived from the human body;

and does not achieve its primary intended action by pharmacological, immunological or metabolic means, in or on the human body, but which may be assisted in its intended function by such means.

Note: Products which may be considered to be medical devices in some jurisdictions but not in others and are listed within EuroScan database as medical devices include:

  • disinfection substances,
  • aids for persons with disabilities,
  • devices incorporating animal and/or human tissues,
  • devices fertilization or assisted reproduction technologies

In Vitro Diagnostics (or just Diagnostics)

In Vitro Diagnostics (IVD) means an article intended specifically by its manufacturer to be used together with a particular IVD medical device to enable or assist that device to be used in accordance with its intended use. For example, any kind of imaging tool by this is not included under the diagnostic category.

Procedures (Medical) the act, method, or manner of proceeding in some process or course of action connected with health-related issues in clinical areas, health related practice or study of health-related issues. To make a separation between procedures and medical devices keep in mind that if the technology is not performed by a specific medical device, then it should be labelled as a procedure. By this e.g. general surgical procedures or public health issues are mainly listed as procedures. Personalised Medicine procedures are also listed here if they are something general and as they sometimes depend on different kinds of combinations of pharmaceuticals, medical devices, diagnostics and procedures. If they depend on a single technology (e.g. just one pharmaceutical) then the category should be pharmaceutical.

Documents related to methodological developments and information. These can be related to specific methodological issues related to a kind of technology, a specific tie zone of the life-cycle of technologies as well as knowledge management or evidence-based medicine information in principle or any other methodological background information.

Not Defined

Are documents without a specific reflection by the categories above due to several reasons. For historic reasons these are also is included.
